Congressional Black Caucus Gets It Right By Endorsing Steve Cohen (TN-09)

by: admin

Mon Jul 26, 2010 at 23:14:19 PM CDT

The CBC got it right this time when they endorsed incumbent Steve Cohen over former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton in next week's TN-09 showdown.

Cohen represents a largely African-American district and has by all accounts done a phenomenal job in his three terms. While Cohen should win rather easily, this endorsement signifies a change in attitude that Cohen is capable of representing this district.

Herenton, a longtime local pol, has made race a central theme of his campaign by arguing that Tennessee should have at least one African-American member in its delegation and that the two-term representative cannot effectively represent the needs of the district. But the CBC's contribution is only the latest in a string of high-profile endorsements Cohen has scored over Herenton-including President Obama, former civil rights movement leader Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and more than a dozen CBC members.

"The CBC PAC's mission is to increase the number of African-Americans in the U.S. Congress (and) to support non-black candidates who champion CBC interests," PAC Chairman Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) said in his letter that accompanies the check to Cohen. "You have been selected to receive this contribution because of your commitment to the CBC PAC's goals."

Obama's Worst Performance in a Congressional District - AL-04

by: admin

Tue Mar 03, 2009 at 08:05:58 AM CST

Swing State Project has been compiling Presidential results by Congressional Districts. They are nearly complete after months of organizing data. This was no easy task as many Congressional Districts split county lines and even in precincts. Of course compiling the data from Alabama was extremely difficult.

In a sign that does not bode well for Congressman Artur Davis in his 2010 quest for Governor, President Obama only received 22.5% of the vote in AL-04.

Points of interest in this wave include AL-04, which, to our surprise, plummets past the West Texas districts to grab the dubious distinction of Obama's worst performance (at 22%). This district used to send a Democrat to Congress until 1996, and even Gore got 37% here... but this is Alabama's whitest and most rural district, where the southern end of the Appalachians and Birmingham exurbs meet.

Below the thread we will discuss this phenomenon

Obama's Subtle Hurdle from Washington Post

by: admin

Sun Sep 28, 2008 at 04:31:51 AM CDT

I just received notice that my friend Daniel Kiel, law Professor at the University of Memphis, wrote a fantastic article titled "Obama's Subtle Hurdle" published in today's Washington Post .

Having went to Oxford on Friday, I agree with Mr. Kiel's assertion that very little if any real progress has been made with the infusion of race into this Presidential race.  I saw hardly any discussion in the mainstream media of the historical selection of Ole Miss as the first debate site.

Here is the article in full from the Washington Post below the thread.
