Charlie Strong: A Candidate for the Louisville Job

by: admin

Almost exactly a year from today, I wrote an article analyzing why University of Florida Defensive Coordinator Charlie Strong had not been named a head coach. This diary ranks as perhaps the second most clicked articles at our site.

Strong as been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to become the next head football coach at the University of Louisville. I hope he gets that job for a couple reasons. He has been outstanding as a coordinator at Florida with one of the nation's best defenses and deserves his shot. Also, my Alabama Crimson Tide would not longer have to face him in what is fast becoming a yearly ritual in the SEC Championship.

I also hope that we as a society have moved past race enough to allow Strong this opportunity. Those in the sports world that are willing to call it like they see it have been forthcoming in their assessment that Strong has been overlooked because he has a white wife. I addressed all of these concerns in last year's diary.

Tuesday Night Diversion: College Football:

by: admin

Tue Oct 13, 2009 at 22:22:43 PM CDT

My love for politics nearly rivals my love for all things sports. So tonight I offer a college football diversion.

My beloved Alabama Crimson Tide is having another phenomenal season. We overtook Texas for the #2 slot in the AP Top 25 this week.

The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) has yet to release their rankings which balances a formula that nobody seems to understand. The BCS rankings will decide who will play in major bowl games including the National Championship game.

I think Alabama and Florida will meet in the SEC championship game and then the winner will occupy one slot in the BCS title game. Who will take the other slot?

Why Hasn't Charlie Strong Gotten a Head Coaching Job?

by: admin

Fri Dec 05, 2008 at 19:52:18 PM CST

This will probably be the most emotional diary I have ever written.  I was listening to a local sports radio talk show today regarding the football head coach vacancy at Auburn University. One of the names that came up was Charlie Strong - the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at the University of Florida. It was suggested that Strong, an African American, despite some pretty solid credentials has not been strongly considered for other head coaching jobs and may not this one perhaps because he is married to a Caucasian woman. Let me say that the hosts on this show were not promoting this as a valid reason. Just something that has been mentioned and they defended the contention that this fact should absolutely not exclude Strong.
