Was Race a Factor in Auburn's Football Coach Selection?

by: admin

Mon Dec 15, 2008 at 17:56:39 PM CST

Auburn University officials have received perhaps not even their fair share of criticism for their handling of firing football coach Tommy Tuberville and hiring Gene Chizik. Most Auburn fans that I've talked to and those that I've listened to on local sports talk radio believe that Chizik comes far from qualified after a 5-19 record in his two years of head coaching at Iowa State. Other potential hires such as Turner Gill, who would have been the first African-American football coach at Auburn, would have been much more popular with fans and alumni.

The outspoken Charles Barkley, who also might be the most famous alumnus of Auburn, says that his school did not hire Gill because of race. I wrote about this issue in depth last week  as related to, well-qualified University of Florida Defensive Coordinator, Charlie Strong

Barkley speaks directly to this search coming down to Chizik and Gill.

"I think race was the No. 1 factor," said Barkley, who played basketball for three seasons at Auburn during the early 1980s. "You can say it's not about race, but you can't compare the two resumes and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume."

Talking some College Football

by: admin

Unless you took a nap this afternoon and just woke up you are aware that the Florida Gators and their high-octane offense defeated the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama kept it close until Florida and Tim Tebow took over in the 4th quarter. Kudos to Alabama on a great season and what should be BCS appearance in the Sugar Bowl. Look for Florida to most likely square off against the Oklahoma Sooners as Boomer Sooner is putting it to Missouri right now.

On other fronts, Buffalo coach Turner Gill may be interviewed for the Auburn head coaching job. According to an Al.com   article, Auburn has asked for permission to speak to Gill.
The Buffalo News
reports that the Buffalo AD Warde Manuel spoke with Auburn officials yesterday.

Of course like you would expect from a coaching search you will not get anything from the horse's mouth:

Gill was out recruiting on Saturday and was not available for comment and Manuel declined comment.

I talked to a source at any SEC school that says Auburn is keeping this close to the vest. Gill is an attractive candidate as he turned around Buffalo ,one of the perennial losers in college football, and turned them into MAC Champs. Gill will also surely get some interviews as the up and coming African American coach of the moment. However, this is still Gill's first winning season and trip to a bowl game.

My article yesterday on Charlie Strong was not an indictment of Auburn or a push for them to hire a black coach. I was simply inquiring as to why Strong has not been offered a head coaching job. From what we saw of Strong and his defense today surely the case will be even stronger.

I am of the opinion that Gill should not be interviewed only to appease those who think there are a lack of minority coaches in college football. First of all Gill is already a head coach and will surely get several legitimate job offers. If he is interviewed I hope that it is because he is a well-qualified candidate that would be seriously considered on his merits.
