Alabama Attorney General Troy King announced he is one of several Republican AG's asking for an investigation into Ben Nelson's trade off for health care reform vote.
Alabama Attorney General Troy King says the investigation by 13 Republican attorneys general into a deal that allowed a Democrat-backed health care reform bill to pass the U.S. Senate is not motivated by politics.
King said he and the attorneys general believe a deal that provides special treatment for Nebraska's Medicaid program is unconstitutional and was designed to win the vote of Democratic Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson.
King said he expects Democratic attorneys general to join the investigation before it's over. He said he was reaching out to other attorneys general regardless of party.
The Republican attorneys general have written a letter to congressional leaders telling them to remove the Nebraska deal from the final version of the health care reform bill or face legal action.
Not motivated by politics? - it's all about politics. his re-election campaign.
What about an investigation into deals made with war contractors? Instead he's worried about something that has not even passed Congress yet. Jeez. This is just pathetic.
Alabama's Attorney-General, Troy King, will lead a mission to Queensland to lobby for an appeal, his office told The Sun-Herald yesterday. If that isn't successful, he will push "America's legal boundaries to the limit" and attempt to charge Watson with murder, for the second time, when he is deported back to the US upon his release.
Tomorrow Mr King will write to the Townsville Supreme Court and Queensland Attorney-General, Cameron Dick, to express his disappointment with the Australian legal system.
The letter will state: "On behalf of the victim's family, I am respectfully requesting that this Honorable Court grant an appeal for re-sentencing of the defendant. I stand ready to appear in front of this Honorable Court if you so desire."
Alabama's assistant attorney-general, Don Valeska, said: "I don't wish to throw stones at the Australian prosecutors but they spent hundreds of hours on this and told me personally they had a very strong case. It now seems Tina's parents made a huge mistake letting them handle this. What were they thinking? Had we known Watson was only going to get a year, we would have begged the prosecutors to drop all charges and send him back to America.
"It is a fact that he would have received at least 20 years here, probably life without parole, because we can demonstrate he killed for the money."
During tough economic times is a trip to Australia the best way to handle the situation. What's wrong with a press conference or sending a letter? I guess Troy doesn't like Return to Sender, Address Unknown.
Get your big bag of popcorn and large gulp soda. Based on the previews, I don't think you want to miss what should be Oscar winning performances in the Alabama 2010 election cycle.
Today, 2006 Lt. Governor Republican Luther Strange announced that he will be a candidate for Attorney General in 2010. His toughest battle will likely be the primary against incumbent Troy King.
I would like to point out the irony (or would I say strategic planning) of Strange's announcement the same day we learn that the Feds are issuing subpoenas for AG office records and employee appearances.
This comes on the heels of April news that Troy King appeared at a party for land developer Ronnie Gilley and his planned County Crossing theme parking and gambling venue in Houston County.. Probably not news in itself except that King issued an opinion three months later clearing the way for Gilley to get a gambling permit for a planned development. While this was not illegal in and of itself, King again drew questions to his character and ethics.
2010 AG Race Outlook
Luther Strange raised a boatload of money in 2006. He got pretty hard though in memorable adds that more or less called him elitist and a tennis playing Mt. Brook club member.
While King will certainly play the same angle in 2010, I think that his lack of ethics will certainly put Strange in a much better position. King will likely need gambling interest and trial lawyer money to stay competitive in raising money. However, those connections would be pointed out by Strange.
Then again King could be indicted and possibly removed from office. Doubtful but still plausible.
I give the slight advantage to Luther Strange although Troy King seems to have a lot of political lives.
Troy King will run for re-election according to Doc's Political Parlor . Danny from Doc's was in attendance as King made his announcement to a "Young Republican" crowd.
Before a receptive crowd of 150 or more at tonight's meeting of the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans at the Fox & Hound at the Colonnade on 280, Troy King announced his intention to run for re-election to the Attorney General spot in 2010. FWIW, many of those in attendance haven't been young Republicans for many years.
With his wife and three children by his side, he said he was tempted to run for the open Governor's seat, but added, "Alabama citizens are far safer than they were just five years ago, but not as safe as they should be... I made a promise five years ago to stand up for all of you, and tonight I renew that promise." He is "extremely proud" of his record and results. "Tonight, I am proud to announce my intention to seek re-election" to the Attorney General spot.
After his brief remarks, he indicated he would not linger because it was a school night. He closed, "Tonight my prayers are the same as they are every night, that God's blessings will be on our party, our friends, our state, and our country."
While his family slipped out, King stayed at least a bit for handshakes and photos.
I've got a few questions.
1) Will King run from Jail? - badump tish
Actually I had some more , but I decided to stop right there.
Lot of interesting rumblings in Alabama politics today.
1. There is a lot of talk about a Federal Grand Jury investigating Alabama Attorney General Troy King. Doc's Political Parlor has the links to all the stories. Some thing it is purely political and others are quite happy to see the AG in this position.
2. Montgomery is having a Mayoral Election today. Six candidates are running to replace Congressman Bobby Bright. Conventional wisdom is that today's election will produce Todd Strange in a runoff with Michael Briddell. However, a lot will depend on turnout and of course Strange could get 50% + 1 to avoid a runoff altogether.
3. I've heard from a few different reliable sources that Selma Senator Hank Sanders may consider jumping in the 2010 7th Congressional District to replace Artur Davis. Of course this is all speculation and nobody will confirm or deny this rumor. I will say that it could change some of the dynamics at play although I'm on board with my candidate.
Anybody ever see the movie Soul Plane. I caught it the other night for the second time. It's a hip hop version of Airplane with Snoop Dog as the Captain or Chauffeur of the Jet. Anyways my title is a line from the movie. Tom Arnold ,who plays Elvis Hunkee, is a passenger saying "He sounds nice".
They also allege in the Friday complaint that Attorney General Troy King dissolved their jobs as retaliation for filing grievances. Tori L. Adams and Gerrilyn Grant, both black women, filed the complaints alleging discrimination based on race and gender.
"Judge Adams and Judge Grant have a combined total of 47 years in the attorney general's office. Their experience and evaluations are exceptional. It is unfortunate that Attorney General King has denied them positions as division chiefs, we think, based on their race and gender," said Birmingham lawyer John Saxon, who is representing the women.
Looks to me like another instance of where King fast-tracks employees for some sort of political or personal favor. Badump-tish.
2. State of Alabama set to execute a man this week , by lethal injection, for a crime committed in 1982. Finally after 25 years all appeals for the man on death row have been exhausted. Any death penalty enthusiasts want to explain how executing this guy now benefits society?
3. Gambling in Alabama - always a hot issue. But here's a few links to commentary on a couple different gambling issues and an editorial by Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford. Gambling dollars are no longer leaving the state, they are just going to a few select counties like Walker, Greene and Macon. The Birmingham Race Course is a complete dump by the way and perhaps upgrading that facility would keep more dollars in the state.
"My choice today is I'm putting together a campaign that would allow me to run for governor of Alabama,"
Monday was a busy day as Birmingham's locquacious leader Larry Langford was arrested and indicted on a number of federal charges related to his tenure on the Jefferson County Commission.
Wow - The Birmingham News took a not so subtle stab at Troy King this morning.
First, The Headline Reads "Being with the in-crowd at Attorney General Troy King's office has its perks, and one of them is a very generous pay scale"
Then the editorial ends with
But the bottom line is how Alabamians perceive King's conduct. On that front, King should worry. The appearance is that King is using his discretionary powers to reward his buddies. That's no way to run a law firm - at least not when taxpayers are footing the bill.
I feel like at least the Birmingham News realizes there is a "buddy movie" going on over at the Attorney Generals office. They won't classify what genre yet, but at least they have stepped out there just a little.
Maybe now other papers will follow suit and we will see some real investigative journalism.
I took the day off to spend time with family, so I just got a chance to read up on the "developments" in the Troy King "situation".
The Birmingham News finally decided that they would dig a little deeper into allegations that staffers were overpaid. The word on the street is that they are overpaid because they have more than a "working" relationship with their boss.
Regardless of any personal relationships between King and staffers, one should wonder how a 24 year old rose from 10 dollars an hour to a $57k a year job that he is grossly under-qualified for in ten months. Also, is this a starting level salary for a broadcast journalism grad?
We noticed that we were getting noticeably more traffic than usual due to having some mentions of the potential Troy King resignation story. Therefore, while we are focusing on national electoral politics we do want to provide some details on the interests of our readers.
Keep in mind we have never been Troy King supporters primarily because of his stubborness on the death penalty moratorium issue as well as being an over-the-top publicity hound. Furthermore, we find his rhetoric to be disturbingly eerie and also believe that he was not qualified to be appointed to the top post of Alabama Attorney General.
At the same time, we have not been given a creative license because of our feelings to destroy this man or contribute to his demise. We prefer to let the chips fall where they may and just report.
In case some of the readers did want some more information on Troy King, here is a little on past coverage regarding his views on a few issues. King as a student at the University of Alabama wrote
"The existence of the Gay-Lesbian Alliance on this campus is an affront to the state of Alabama, its citizenry, this university and its students," King wrote in a 1992 editorial to The CW. He also wrote opposing abortion and affirmative action. In 1993, he wrote about AIDS: "If this nation's current purveyors of perversion would refrain from committing sodomy, they would unquestionably be spared the ravages of the disease."

The Rumor Mill keeps churning on a scandal involving Alabama Attorney General Troy King. King has long been mentioned as a Republican Candidate for Governor in 2010.
Left in Alabama has a long thread in progress regarding this evolving story.
While King has strong name recognition, he has made some serious blunders and has angered a lot of people by refusing to consider a moratorium on the Death Penalty.
We are not going to speculate on the details of the alleged scandal, but we will keep an eye on this if anything develops tomorrow or in the coming days ahead. If King were to resign, this development would have a major effect on the 2010 races.
