Lebron James going to Miami is bad for Cleveland's economy. That's the obvious. His departure might have angered fans more than with Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns.
The "King" never won a championship in Cleveland and for that reason I think he has been a colossal disappointment. Never has there been more hype for an athlete that has failed to win a championship. Granted he's still young, but now going to Miami and having a supporting cast of Wade and Bosh he's in a much different position. He might not be second fiddle to Dwayne Wade but he's certainly not going to be like #23 was to Scotty Pippen.
All in all - This move is going to make it harder to watch NBA. It's become more scripted than a WWE match with all of the collusion.
Today's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest was all about Joey Chestnut. World-beater Kobayashi did not show up for today's favorite sporting event. Chestnut takes his 4th straight title.
I've been a big fan of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest for a while.
One of the ESPN announcers said that Lebron James would have to wait until tomorrow to announce where he would sign because today is all about Joey Chestnut.
USA and Joey Chestnut retain the Yellow Mustard belt yet again.
Halliburton was working on the Deepwater Horizon rig just before it blew up, opening the well and sending oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. Some experts have speculated that the company may have been to blame for the explosion. The pro-oil atmosphere (and Cheney's continued links to Halliburton) during his vice presidency, have also come to the fore since the April 20 accident.
#2 The Courage Campaign has a funny video up about Dick Cheney's endorsement of Meg Whitman.
#3 Big week in sports with the World Cup, NBA Finals and the US Open at Pebble Beach. The Progressive Electorate will have coverage from Thursday's opening round! I got tickets. Also this is make or break time for the MLB All Star game. Here in San Francisco there is a lot of talk about who will get selected and who left off. Any of the following could be on the team; Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Barry Zito, Brian Wilson, Pablo Sandoval, Aubrey Huff, Juan Uribe. Jonathan Sanchez has a 2.83 ERA and 70+ Ks 1.15 Whip and he's not even in the conversation. As a Giants fan I have to say it's nice to have these problems. Finally the Pac 10 is now the Pac 11 and we just lost out on acquiring Texas. If all we get is Colorado, this will be a lame move.
One of the great ones passed away today. I know I'm guilty of hyperbole, but calling John Wooden great is an understatement. Greatest is more appropriate.
Ten national championships in twelve seasons. What a phenomenal coach. But what an even better person.
My favorite John Wooden story is about how he would write love letters to his deceased wife Nellie every month. Just a class act and someone who inspired so many.
A few weeks ago Alex Rodriguez on his way back from 3rd to 1st base ran across the pitching mound. Dallas Braden the Oakland A's pitcher at the time told him to get off his mound. A Rod later said it was funny coming from a guy with a handful of wins. Well now one of those in his hand is a perfect game.
After today's game Dallas gave his grandmother a big hug on the field and shared a very special moment. Dallas' mother had passed away from cancer when he was a teen, and his grandmother helped straighten him out. After his big win tonight she spoke to the media.. according to Susan Slusser who reports for the SF Chronicle she told A-Rod to "stick it". What an awesome grandma! :D
Susan Slusser is also reporting that this is only the second perfect game in A's history the last was Catfish Hunter on May 8, 1968.
Dallas Braden admits to having been a wild teenager, and he got wilder still after losing his mother - to skin cancer - when she was barely in her 40's. "I came real close to taking it away from myself, then my grandmother stepped in and kind of slapped me back into shape and got me going," he told Baseball America after he won his first big league game. "I told my grandma that someday she would watch me pitch in the majors."
The loyalty goes both ways. Braden throws a perfect game - on Mother's Day - on Breast Cancer Awareness Day - for Grandma. And Grandma promptly tells the media, per this tweet by A's beat writer Susan Slusser, "Stick it, A-Rod!"
he decision to wear the jerseys on the Cinco de Mayo holiday stems from a law passed by the Arizona Legislature and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer that has drawn widespread criticism from Latino organizations and civil rights groups that say it could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics. President Barack Obama has called the law "misguided."
In announcing Phoenix would wear its "Los Suns" jerseys for Game 2, Suns owner Robert Sarver went out of his way to knock Arizona's controversial immigration enforcement law.
Sarver, who was born and raised in Tucson, said frustration with the federal government's failure to deal with the illegal immigration issue led to the passage of what he called "a flawed state law."
"However intended, the result of passing the law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question," he said, "and Arizona's already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them."
It took nearly 18 years and it had to come against my team the Atlanta Braves, but Ubaldo Jimenez pitched the first no-hitter in Colorado Rockies History.
First no-hitter of the season in baseball.
It's hard to root against your own team but when you have a moment like this you just gotta cherish it and be appreciative. As a lifelong baseball fan I am happy for Jimenez and the Rockies who have really started to come into their own over the last few seasons.
Well officially it was last night with the Yankees and Red Sox game. I failed to watch one pitch and have no idea who won.
My opening day game is the Braves hosting the Cubs at the Ted. I came home early from the office to catch opening pitch. Should be a good year as we host a farewell tour for our longtime skipper, Bobby Cox, and watch him ride off into the Sunset hopefully with one more playoff appearance. A World Series ring would be nice.
College hoops. This is your hcr vote open thread diversion. If you love the underdogs as I'm sure a lot of you do, then you should love this tournament.
Northern Iowa shocks #1 Kansas. You don't have to be the best. You just have to be better than the best for 40 minutes. Survive and advance baby. St. Mary's and Northern Iowa slay two college basketball superpowers. Villanova down. Kansas down.
How's your bracket looking?
I had a great second day, but I'm looking rough today. Although my Tenn in the elite eight pick is looking decent.
I do and I know a lot of us college baseketball fanatics are out there.
Since I got mad at my mom when i was in elementary school and she wouldn't let me watch the 1985 Championship game between Georgetown and Villanova, I've watched as much as possible of the tournament over the last 25 years.
I no longer enter pools, I gave that up. I am having a March Madness competition for fun and bragging rights. Feel free to join us
(Reminder - Get your picks in before Thursday morning - promoted by admin)
A lot of us are sports fanatics here. Everyone is a March Madness fan. Join our challenge. I can't even remember who won last year. I know I did terrible though.
The Winter Olympics have ended. The USA Hockey players put up a nice fight against the Canadian Team although lost in an epic game that went into sudden death overtime. The NFL has already issued a press release saying "Overtime works". Not really, but a thought.
Chile - Death toll passed 700. Electricity out and water is sparse. A terrible disaster.
1. Today is shoutout sunday on Twitter - help us promote the better and improved version of follow friday and give good karma to those who deserve it the most.
2. Trying to recover from the trip - very well rested
We are down to six teams in the NFL playoffs. And tomorrow night we shall say then there were four.
Both New Orleans and Indianapolis looked good IMO today. Caution to the wind though as Arizona looked vulnerable last week and got Colt McCoyed when Warner got drilled today. Oh and Baltimore just looked sloppy sloppy on offense and defense tonight.
I do expect these two teams to win again next week against TBD opponents either the Cowboys or the Vikings for the Saints and the Colts will tackle either the Chargers or the J- E - T- S.
I think we will see Indy vs. New Orleans with an epic battle as the Colts win their second championship with Peyton Manning at the helm.
Wow - USC hires a guy who ignores the NCAA rules in Lane Kiffin. That's my first thought. Mind boggling especially when they are probably doing plenty of snooping right now around the USC campus.
Well Rocky Top Rocky Flop - Kiffin did a decent job in one year and moves on from Knoxvegas to Hollywood
This coaching carousel and game of musical chairs is wild.
