Our Candidate List
My younger brother bought me this book for Christmas and I thought it was well done. De Mesquita is "a master of game theory" and professor of politics at NYU and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institute. According to the book flap one of his recent books was co-authored by Condoleezza Rice. His conservative leanings pop up once or twice in the book but it's mostly a non factor.
I'm not quite sure how to write this review. Should I preview the book and let you read it for yourself or give you my full breakdown? I'll do both and hope for comments to let me know which is preferred going forward.
(Martin W says you can get it on Amazon by clicking this link and helping PE)
Good afternoon, Progressive Electorate readers. This is your afternoon open thread to discuss all things Hill-related. Use this thread to praise or bash Congresscritters, share a juicy tip, ask questions, offer critiques and suggestions, or post manifestos. We'll be here all weekend.
Some of the Hill news that's fit to blog is over the fold...
********
Bill Clinton hospitalized with chest pains.
Clinton, 63, was transported to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan for a condition related to his heart.
ABC News' chief political correspondent George Stephanopoulos reported that sources said he was taken to the hospital "likely for a stent procedure."
Sources on Capital Hill tell ABC News that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was seen leaving the Oval Office a short time ago and did not seem "too concerned" or "in a rush."
It took about 12 hours for the right to diss Rep. Murtha after his death. on twitter so the count down for it to begin against Pres. Clinton is over.
MIT has done an analysis of the Senate Healthcare Bill and found that it saves money.
Politico The report concludes that under the Senate's health-reform bill, Americans buying individual coverage will pay less than they do for today's typical individual market coverage, and would be protected from high out-of-pocket costs...
The "microsimulation" analysis is by Jonathan Gruber, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Treasury Department official under President Bill Clinton. Gruber used data from the Congressional Budget Office.
Gruber concludes that people purchasing individual insurance would save an annual $200 (singles) to $500 (families) in 2009 dollars. And people with low incomes would receive premium tax credits that would reduce the price that they pay for health insurance by as much as $2,500 to $7,500.
This goes in the face of what the whining masses have screeched since 1/20/09 about spending. I won't hear it about this healthcare bill anymore. Not from the howling throngs of teabaggers or from the Congressmen who pass $690B a year Defense bills only to crow about $1T over 10 year healthcare bills.
Bill Clinton was scheduled to be at the President's Cup practice round today in sunny Northern California. The President's Cup is the penpremiere team competition in golf. It's America versus the World (minus Europe). I was there today following around Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker, the #1 and #2 players in the World. Oversight of this game was also provided by assistant to the USA team Michael Jordan. Yet, my hero Bill Clinton was nowhere to be found. Word on the street is that John Garamendi's campaign asked 42 to participate in a fundraiser for health care reform rally at South San Francisco's Basque Cultural center. What a good Democrat this man is!! He gave up a great time and swapped out his Harding Park Meatball sub for blackened chicken.
Some homemade videos and a little more news below the fold..
A laundry list of what I learned on the 1st day of Netroots Nation 2009. Well observations anyways -
1. Charlie Cook - pictured at the podium is really funny and gracious. He told us that "standing maximizes the distance between his head and his ass".
2. Nate Silver is as smart as advertised. And he agrees Moneyball is a great book.
3. Wignutts are saying at town hall forums - I'm on social security and medicare and I don't want the government in our lives
4. Congressman Brad Miller is a netroots hero even though he had to "google teabagging". He's also passionate about cramdown legislation in bankruptcy allowing home mortgages to be modified.
5. Bill Clinton although an "unlikely hero" of the netroots still can fire folks up like no other. He also gives a better speech after being heckled.
Wow - It's been a year since Netroots Nation 2008 in Austin. Just got to Pittsburgh and extremely pumped about the festivities. So many discussions and events to choose from.
If you are unable to attend you can watch live and chat on facebook .
Some of the panels that I'm considering attending:
4. The Opening Keynote with President Bill Clinton - I've had a chance to hear him speak twice and always a treat
If you are going to be there we look forward to seeing you. If you are not perhaps you will check it out on the tubes. Let us know if there are some other items on the agenda that we should check out as well.
Netroots Nation's fourth annual gathering kicks off this Thursday in Pittsburgh. President Bill Clinton will be there to get it started in fashion.
I'm very jealous of those in attendance, Bill Clinton is my hero! I should have worked harder to get that scholarship or raise money for the trip ;0~
Oh well, I can still check it out streaming live at Head On Radio Network.
Scheduled Aug 13-16
Thursday Aug 13 - Bill Clinton
Friday Aug 14 - Senator Specter and Rep Sestak (both candidates for PA-SEN in 2010)
Saturday Aug 15 - Valerie Jarret, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, Change to Win Chair Anna Burger and economist Dean Baker
"There are moral absolutes, God's law is indeed there to protect you from yourself. There are consequences if you breach that. This press conference is a consequence."
At first it was not clear what Sanford was referencing.
"I've been unfaithful to my wife and I've developed a relationship with what stared as a dear, dear friend from Argentina," he finally said. The affair has been going on for a year, he later explained.
This shouldn't be a national story. Yet it is, because Republicans have made it that way. The majority wanted to impeach Bill Clinton for his affair and for hiding it from the public. So where are the calls for Sanford to resign his governorship? He did resign his leadership position at the RGA.
How will this be treated in the media? It has a lot of interesting pieces to the story, first that the staff lied and said he was on the Appalachian trail. But really he was in Argentina. Late night comedians are gonna do a lot with this one!
"I spent the past five days of my life crying in Argentina," he said, "so I could come back and cry here."
Less than five hours till the kickoff as my Alabama Crimson Tide takes on the Florida Gators. Alabama ranked #1 in the polls is still considered an underdog to the Florida Gators with their potent offense and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. I think we can take the chompers. Hey if we win, I'm holding out hope that my fraternity brothers in the ticket business will sell me their BCS Championship tickets for face value. It's the right thing to do.
Anyways I'm still following some politics and news of interest today in anticipation of an afternoon and evening completely devoted to the pigskin. Here's my lineup: 2012 Presidential race; NY U.S. Senate appointment and O.J. Simpson
While this news is not a deal breaker for our chances in Georgia, it means we've got to work harder. We have just had two days of early voting in Georgia and those numbers are not promising as reported by the AJC .
This should not be a damper but rather a wake up call that we need to volunteer in person if we are close by, help with phone calls if you are far away and donate donate donate if you can.
Please help me reach my goal of turning Georgia Peach to Blue.
That is a picture that my wife took live from the Convention Hall. Find some artistic value in it for me please.
Unfortunately, I had some business matters to attend to and could not make it out as I had hoped.
"Barack Obama is on the right side of history."
Just one of the many lines of praise for Obama. He has really pumped him up from the perspective of the Commander in Chief than nobody else could as Clinton says besides President Carter.
If you criticized Hillary for not speaking to the question "Is Barack ready to lead?", I think Bill answered that without a doubt.
Barack Obama ,according to the most qualified person to give us that answer, is most definitely ready to take this country forward as Commander in Chief.
