Our Candidate List
I'm hoping that everyone is just on vacation or holiday this week. Please let me know you are out there and I'm not just blogging for my own enjoyment.
Let's do a little roll call.
Who is following along on the intertubes and where are you dialing in from?
example - Martin W and I'm from Alabama where we speak English.
sorry for the bad Tim James joke there. I don't give a rip where you are from, just as long as you are paying attention. Listen up, gather your armies because I've been a cop, a farmer, a hedge fund manager, a Zamboni driver, a fantasy football trophy maker, you name it
I've got a long day tomorrow, but looking forward to a holiday weekend. Unfortunately, not a long holiday weekend. I hate it when holidays fall on a Sunday. I feel obligated to work on Monday. Saturday holidays justify taking off on Friday. Bummer.
Tomorrow is my fourth year anniversary. Can't believe my wife has put up with me that long.
Anyways - What in the world of politics catches your eye?
Let's make this an open thread. Stir up some excitement today folks as we talk about anything.
A couple of quick thoughts on last night's elections.
South Carolina - Republican Incumbent Bob Inglis lost in SC-04. Some will attribute this to his slam of Glenn Beck . This brings the total to five incumbents that have been defeated in Congressional primaries.
Tim Scott will likely be the first African American Republican Congressman since J.C. Watts as he defeated Strom Thurmond's son Paul in SC-01. I just learned that Strom was 74 when he had Paul. In fact Strom fathered 4 children between the ages of 68-74.
Utah - Blue Dog Jim Mattheson withstood a challenge from the left in UT-02.
North Carolina
Elaine Marshall defeated DSCC backed Cal Cunningham in the NC-Sen Dem runoff. Bad move by the DSCC here getting involved in a primary.
Any other thoughts on last night's elections. Anything you found interesting or important?
Good afternoon, Progressive Electorate readers. This is your afternoon open thread to discuss all things Hill-related. Use this thread to praise or bash Congresscritters, share a juicy tip, ask questions, offer critiques and suggestions, or post manifestos.
This is an open source project, so feel free to add your own insights. Here's the news I found lurking around the Internets...
I've seen a lot of registered folks on the site lately. Just wanted to see if we could get a roll call type thread going on where everyone is from. Feel free to identify yourself any way you feel prudent.
I'll Start - I'm Martin W and I'm from the great state of Birmingham, Alabama
Building on that year-long effort, the President has now put forth a proposal that incorporates the work the House and the Senate have done and adds additional ideas from Republican members of Congress. The President has long said he is open to any good ideas for reforming our health care system, and he looks forward to discussing ideas for further improvements from Republicans and Democrats at an open, bipartisan meeting on Thursday.
Did the administration make a fatal mistake by not ramming it down when we apparently had the votes?
Now we also face the possibility of older Dem Senators that are ill and if had to be replaced would be in the hands of Republican Gov's. See New Jersey.
From what I've seen a lot of money being poured into the Alabama Gubernatorial Race - the first reports filed in the race which has been in effect nearly a year.
Watch the Senate, Gubernatorial and IL-10 primaries.
In the Senate Dem side we should expet State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and FOO (friend of Obama) to win although he's been beaten up lately which could mean trouble in the fall
IL-10 is the seat where Dan Seals failed to beat Mark Kirk (who is running for Sen) twice and is going for the third times a charm appeal. Usually not a very successful motto in electoral politics.
At least in my own head my thoughts matter because Today is Friday. Yay. It's been a long interesting week here over at the ole saloon.
1. Well for my Alabama political followers we are in the middle of a wild west shootout over gambling.
I'm not sure I can get into this without making a long story even longer.
Electronic bingo halls at Victoryland in Montgomery and County Crossings in Dothan were each unsuccessfully raided early this morning. The Governor ordered the raids through his special task force on gambling. That's a whole nother story and last weeks news.
After letting the speech sink in do you have any new thoughts? Will the jobs bill come to fruition? Less or more enthusiastic about health care reform?
Did you gleam anything from the Republican response?
I thought it was unique that the VA Gov gave the response in his Chamber. Usually it's just a one on one duel with the teleprompter without a live audience.
Great traffic day here yesterday. Let's keep the excitement and the momentum moving.
Conan O'Brien closed out his final show with Will Ferrell and his very pregnant wife singing Free Bird. Conan joined in on the guitar. Good times. Great memories. Is that ZZ Top in the band?
I'm suppose to be on a mini two day vacation. Well my internal rooster woke me up on schedule and I've proceeded to log in some work hours and now find myself back over here. Here are some links that I find interesting and perhaps you will agree
1. NY Sen - Gillibrand far ahead of Harold Ford Jr in Dem primary polling - Only recently did I become aware that Ford had moved to NY and become interested in this race. These results reaffirm my suspicion that he will probably fail to gain any real support at this point in time.
2. Alabama State House committee approved a gambling bill - By my first take this essentially would simply allow gaming on cruise ships docked in Mobile. The gaming/gambling debate will likely consume a large percentage of the Legislative working hours this session. Of course this must still go through full House and Senate.
