Our Candidate List
First check out this ad for Regina Thomas- the Challenger in this primary - Also,if you get a wild hair click on the thermometer and give her some spare change.
Barack Obama endorsed Bush Dog John Barrow and cut an ad for him in his primary contest against State Senator Regina Thomas. There has been a lot of criticism of this action. From a political standpoint, I can see why Obama may have acted. Recent polls show that Georgia may be in play and helping Barrow can help him.
I think the race itself should be the real issue and the fascination of this contest.
This is an interesting seat considering the history of how the seat was created and how Barrow came to occupy this seat. Also, we have seen how he has retained this seat despite redistricting.
Political legend has it this seat was created for Champ Walker, an African American businessman and son of an embattled popular State Senator in 2002. Walker ran an abomination of a capmpaign and had ethical problems. I know he faced a DUI and some other charges. Max Burns, a Georgia Southern professor, won the election although demographics were not in his favor. This was a targeted DCCC race in 2004 and Barrow won with Athens his home base carrying him through in a rematch with Burns.
This seat still has 40% African American populaton although it was re-drawn in attempt to get rid of Barrow and Jim Marshall another Blue Dog.
Who is John Barrow? Barrow had to move to Savannah for the last cycle and beat Burns. (in the narrowest of margins in any race with a Dem incumbent).Barrow votes consistently lock step with Bush on tax cuts and the War in Iraq. Barrow is a corporate Democrat receiving more than half of his contributions from PAC's. click here to go to Open Secrets Barrow is a conservative dem that doesn't sit in a R+10 or even R+5. He is in a D+2, which should be reliably safe this cycle with no real strong Republican challenger. For instance, Barrow is more conservative than Chet Edwards.
See progressive punch
Now I'm still supporting Obama, but I'm not with him in this race. I think we've got to go with the more progressive candidate like we did with Edwards in Maryland. Just watch the video and halfway through you will see why she would be a better representative for this district.
I've just started an act blue page for Thomas -
Even if Thomas doesn't win, a tight contest could put Barrow in check. Or this effort may help in the recruitment of another more progressive candidate in 2010. I'm not opposed to a Blue Dog dem, I just do not think this District needs this one.
