More on Auburn Confederate Flag Story -

About two weeks ago I wrote a diary about Artur Davis's comments regarding confederate flags behind removed from graves by an Auburn City Councilman by the name of Arthur Dowdell.

I agreed with Congressman Davis then and I hold true now to my belief that the graves are deemed private property and that the Councilman did not have the right to take the flags.

This past week Dowdell publicly apologized for taking the flags, but did not show remorse for his feelings.

"If I as a city councilman I had known that the Daughters of the Confederacy had put those flags out, maybe we would have a different outcome," he said. "As far as feeling sorry about that flag and if I feel that I did something remiss, I do not feel bad."

Mr. Dowdell has a right to feel the way that he does. I was concerned about the way that he proceeded in handling his emotions. This flag issue is a very heated issue and I think that both sides should engage in dialogue. In that respect I do agree with Congressman Davis although I do not agree with his opposing vote this past week to hate crime legislation.

Of course not all agree with my comments and I encourage debate here. I urge you to publish your comments here if you are so inclined. You can read one opposing viewpoint by Dr. Jonathan Farley of The Black Commentator . He makes some interesting points about the entire issue of the history and discourse of the Confederate Flag.
