American Exceptionalism In Our Prisons: 1 in 9 Black Males Jailed

Here's an interesting take from the other side of the pond about America's prison industrial complex.

Why are we not discussing this on our TV programs? I remember fifteen years ago Americans were furious that our Nikes were made with slave labor. But now because it's incarcerated Americans with drug habits that's OK? Some of those jobs sound pretty good too, assembling military equipment? Do we really have to cheap out on wage costs for that? We spend $700B a year on military and we're cutting corners by hiring inmates rather than providing working wage jobs? WTF?

i'm glad you posted this (4.00 / 1)
wearing my hat as a criminal defense attorney i am not surprising but still astounded with these statistics

25 years for stealing nine video tapes - that's how i feel

i had a client convicted of trafficking (possession of 3.1 lbs of marijuana) - no proof that it was being sold that was sentenced to 20 years - if over a certain amount it is considered trafficking regardless of whether there is any evidence of selling or trafficking.

don't get me started - but thank you and these are the type of issues that I hope we can discuss more.
