Ron Sparks Receives Endorsement from Bishop Arthur Dowdell (AL-Gov)

This morning I received a release (see text of letter below the thread) announcing that Arthur Dowdell had endorsed Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks in the Democratic Primary for Governor. Dowdell, also an Auburn City Councilman, you might remember from earlier this year when he was involved in a controversy involving his removal of confederate flags placed on graves in Auburn.

Artur Davis issued some remarks about Dowdell's involvement. At the time I agreed with Davis's comments; however, I can see why Dowdell would be upset with what he felt to be simply more unnecessary politicization of the Confederate Flag issue.

I credit Dowdell in that he does not endorse Sparks simply for Davis not agreeing with him on this one issue. Dowdell points out the records and achievements of Ron Sparks first and then explains his differences with Davis. The letter draws attention to Davis's opposition to the public option before discussing the flag issue.

I have no understanding of the specific influence of Arthur Dowdell in Auburn or other regions of the State, but I do believe this endorsement is significant in that it again shows that support for Davis or Sparks will not fall solely along racial lines. Dowdell is not alone in his criticisms of Davis and how his voting has been perhaps too conservative for his district. This is certainly not the first and will not be the last critique of Davis along these lines during this long Gubernatorial election.

admin :: Ron Sparks Receives Endorsement from Bishop Arthur Dowdell (AL-Gov)
Dear Friend:

After 12 years as an Auburn City Councilman, 25 years as a civil rights activist, and 35 years as a Full Gospel pastor, I have finally reached the independent age of 55.

It is with that spirit of independence and conviction that I urge your support for Ron Sparks for Governor.  Why do I support him?

First, I believe that Ron Sparks is the best qualified to lead our state in challenging times. Ron is compassionately concerned about all Alabamians. He appointed blacks to two of the four top deputy positions at the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries. He also appointed blacks to 27 of 66 voter registrar seats across the state.

Ron also courageously opened up trade to Cuba, which now gets 50% of its poultry and 90% of its wood from Alabama. He has traveled to Africa, Asia and Latin America, seeking greater markets for Alabama goods and services. Ron also turned his department into Alabama's Consumer Protection Agency, promoting food safety, healthy products and child nutrition.

Why am I not supporting Artur Davis, the only other serious Democratic candidate for Governor? First, I was, and am, a strong Obama supporter. I support Obama's public health option, something badly needed by our numerous uninsured brethren. Artur Davis opposes the public option, apparently currying favor with more conservative voters.

Secondly, when I took a stand earlier this year against the proliferation of Confederate flags in a public cemetery, Artur Davis criticized me for that. In his effort to play for more votes, Artur has become insensitive to the suffering this flag has represented to African-Americans as a people.

Alabama can do better. We can do better. Please vote for Ron Sparks and encourage others to do likewise.

Sincerely,

Bishop A.L. Dowdell

This is embarrassing - even by Sparks campaign standards (4.00 / 1)
The "endorsement" Sparks is touting here comes from the least popular political figure in Auburn and it leaves out a few important facts...

Like, for example, Ron Sparks is on the record OPPOSING the health care bill in the House. Yes, the one with the public option.

Also, Dowdell speaks of pandering to conservative voters.  Perhaps someone should show him the video of Ron Sparks' recent appearance on the Glenn Beck Show.

Or, better yet, Dowdell might want to read the transcript from the Over the Mountain Dems forum where Sparks says that a black man can't win because of "how Alabama is."  Yes, that's Ron's rationale for his candidacy.

Of course, this is the same Ron Sparks who parrots GOP talking points in opposing a constitutional convention and who told the Business Council that he would turn away stimulus funding to expand unemployment benefits.

This release tells me that it's amateur hour at Sparks headquarters and Ronnie has no real political support.

note that Dowdell did point out some good things about Sparks as Ag Commish.

you do raise some very good counterpoints. I think that both candidates will be susceptible to criticism for their record and stances. But lets hope this is a positive primary with the end result being a stronger Dem nominee in the General.
